I’m John Baumann, a freelance Thai-to-English translator based in Richmond, Virginia, with over 35 years experience as a Thai language speaker, amateur scholar, and enthusiast. After earning my B.S. in Microbiology, I served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Kanchanaburi province, where I worked in the Royal Thai Government’s malaria control program. I have an M.S. in Biophysics and a Ph.D. in Public Policy, with a bioethics focus. In 2017, I launched Mango Apple following a career as a nonprofit (NGO) leader in the areas of health, poverty reduction, and refugee resettlement. I am a member of the American Translators Association and uphold the ATA’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices.
For more than a decade, my colleague Sathit Thongthumrong has been a highly-regarded, Bangkok-based freelance translator. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a Master of Management in his home country, and an M.S. in Computer Science at the University of Houston in the U.S. Before becoming a freelance translator, Sathit’s professional experience entailed translating, managing projects, and facilitating communications between Thai clients and corporate headquarters in the U.S., New Zealand, and Germany.
